Applying Engagement-Based Alternatives to Detention of Migrants in Bulgaria

Applying Engagement-Based Alternatives to Detention of Migrants in Bulgaria

From January 2017 until April 2019, the Center for Legal Aid – Voice in Bulgaria (CLA), in partnership with Bulgarian Lawyers for Human Rights (BLHR), conducted the project “Protecting migrants with precarious status: decreasing the use of detention and applying community-based alternatives”.

As one of three national ATD pilots supported by EPIM, the aim of the project was to gather evidence on the effectiveness of engagement-based ATD, and to promote the feasability and added value of case management in a community placement setting vis-à-vis authorities and other relevant stakeholders.

The project report discusses challenges and opportunities around the implementation of engagement-based ATD in Bulgaria.
