Integration Measures and Advocacy for Undocumented Migrants (IMAS)
IMAS aims to set up integration services for refused asylum seekers in Greece who consequently become undocumented. Based on daily contact and research among these persons in the municipalities of Attika, GCR is raising awareness and advocating a set of legal and social measures to improve their access to fundamental rights and facilitate integration.
In the context of this research, the demographic, economic and social conditions of the participants were examined. The framework in which the investigation was carried out consists of: the social space the participants set in their lives; their social and economical relations; the development of their personality; and how their relations in general were formed and transformed in Greek society. The core of this research is to examine how living without proper documents violates human rights.
| Project Update March 2011 Since the last update, GCR’s social workers have consulted and intervened individually to fulfil the needs and rights of undocumented persons. This has occurred in: schools, ministerial educational authorities, administration of hospitals and municipality health services have been conducted to ensure that the application of law is accurate and effective. GCR’s legal services have focused on addressing the major problem of detention of undocumented persons, in particular minors. Advocacy work has been carried out with authorities and motions on individual basis have been conducted. Efforts towards the “Legalization” of many undocumented persons by way of appealing the failed asylum decisions [right provided by the transitional law –PD 114/2010- for failed -and thus undocumented- asylum seekers]. There has been a close follow-up of practices adopted by authorities applying the new law [L. 3907/2011] as well as multicultural events with communities (Iranian, Afghani, Somali). There has also been the facilitation of lawyers, social workers and the multicultural centre “Pyxida” in regards to informing schools of the new laws. |
