Alternative voices on integration
The project aims to document, strengthen and promote alternative perspectives on the integration debate, drawing on new civil society initiatives being pursued within Muslim, refugee and asylum-seeker communities across Europe. These initiatives are being consolidated into an active network working to strengthen anti-racist civil society whilst influencing European level policymakers and the media.
| Project Update March 2011
EPIM funding for the Alternative Voices on Integration Project came to an end in January 2010 with the last six months of the project proving very hectic indeed. The results of our research findings were published in September 2010 and a concluding networking meeting of Alternative Voices took the form of a public seminar on one strong theme that had emerged from our research, namely how Islamophobia warps the debate on integration. But this concluding learning networking meeting was not the culmination of Alternative Voices, but the beginnings of something new. Individuals and groups from France and Belgium are now using our seminar as a model for workshop and seminars in their cities. A practical follow-up workshop has already taken place in Paris as a direct result of the contacts built at the London seminar and there are plans to hold similar events in Belgium and Sweden in 2011 |

Alternative Voices on Integration in Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK
Institute of Race Relations (2010)
In 2009, the IRR’s European Race Audit (ERA) started its journey of identifying the alternative voices on intergration in Austria, Germany, France, the UK and the Netherlands. This report brings together the interviews and news stories we compiled since the project began. Its primary aim is to bring the coives of the most marginalised – refugees, asylum seekers, migrant workers and second and third-generation ‘immigrants’ from a Muslim background – to a wider hearing.
