Let’s create a more diverse media!
The goal of the project is to improve the relationship between migrant communities and the host society and to create a more diverse media. It aims to ensure a fairer and more balanced portrayal of immigrants in the media by providing journalists with background information about migration issues and also by training and engaging spokespersons from immigrant communities in the communication with the media.

Project Update March 2011

In the past six months, the Migration Awareness Programme of PIN was quite successful in drawing media attention to current events in migration. Based on materials we provided, many Czech and foreign media (including the BBC) covered the phallometric testing of homosexual asylum seekers practiced by Czech Ministry of Interior.

We also successfully brought to the media attention the newly approved conception of economic migration, which the Lidové Noviny Daily covered as one of the main topics of the day. We have also focused on encouraging migrant voices in the public debate. We successfully recommended a young Ukrainian lawyer as a source of information on migration. As a result, 3 articles were published in 2 major national dailies. Other efforts to help this eloquent young woman gain media presence and enter the public debate included an invitation to participate in a panel discussion on migration at a human rights film festival.

We have published 9 new blog entries by migrants in the Migrants’ Forum blog (quoted twice in the media). We have held several media trainings for young migrants and based on the training session at a radio station, we are preparing to launch a new program (in September) with a public radio station about experiences of foreigners in the Czech Republic and of Czechs abroad. A group of migrants will take part in it by sharing their stories, gathering material and participating in other parts of the production.

We organized a workshop for our European network partners dedicated to new media as a tool for alternative communication of migrants with the public. The participants gave very positive reviews of the event. We used the new know-how to create a guidebook on the use of new media and distributed it widely in Czech and English language versions. We also organized a practical workshop on media relations aiming to improve PR skills of our partner NGOs, which have recently reestablished cooperation as part of the Consortium for Migrant Assisting Non-profits in the Czech Republic.
