Migrants and the Media Project
The project supports migrant communities in developing media strategies. Building on the work of established projects in four countries, it is launching a forum to promote exchange of ideas and experiences, is creating a website, and is producing a comprehensive media toolkit and DVD Rom profiling examples of the work done.
| Project Update March 2011
The Migrants and Media Project partners (CRWI, CEPAIM, FOMACS, MRN/MRC, MENEDEK) are all operating in difficult economic times in their countries but have continued to give migrants a voice and helped to change perceptions and challenge the mainstream press. FOMACS was successful in having its mentoring programme broadcast on national radio station in Ireland which brought with it a degree of credibility and market strength. CRWI/DESMe produced a documentary “Homelands” which portrays women and men from Africa, from Balkan countries and from Greece talking about identity (gender, nation, racial etc) and also focuses on their constant search for legal status. CRWI report that they realised how a camera can encapsulate more vividly than other media the feelings and hopes of individuals. CEPAIM’s guide “La Ruta Prometida” has been disseminated in libraries by the local Education Department of Aragon and they are considering an exhibition in Zaragoza. MENEDEK has run a number of workshops for NGOs on communication materials. MRC has produced The New Londoners in a digital format and started debate through social media such as Facebook and Twitter. MRN continues with its newsletters, blogs and discussion fora and now administers the All Party Parliamentary Group on Migrants. |
